The Flag Retreat at Magic Kingdom is one of the park’s most meaningful traditions and has taken place at Town Square since Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. Each day, guests and Cast Members pause as the American flag is lowered and the park honors the service and sacrifice of members of the United States Armed Forces. Surrounded by the cheerful energy of Main Street, U.S.A., the ceremony creates a noticeably quieter and more reflective moment in the middle of a busy Disney day. 🇺🇸✨
Experience
The ceremony takes place around the flagpole in Town Square. Guests are invited to join in the Pledge of Allegiance before a trumpet fanfare signals the formal retreat of the flag.

As “The Star-Spangled Banner” plays, the American flag is slowly lowered and carefully folded. The presentation is respectful and traditional, with the crowd often becoming completely quiet as the ceremony begins. An active-duty service member or veteran visiting the park is selected to serve as the U.S. Armed Forces Representative of the Day. The honored guest participates in the ceremony and receives recognition for their military service. The Flag Retreat is brief, but it carries a sense of importance that feels very different from the rest of Magic Kingdom’s entertainment. It is not presented as a flashy attraction. It is a sincere daily tribute to the men and women who have served the country.
Atmosphere
Town Square already has a strong feeling of classic Americana, making it a natural setting for the ceremony. The train station, Victorian buildings, flower gardens, and American flag create a beautiful backdrop as guests gather around the center of the
square. The mood shifts quickly once the ceremony begins. The sounds of conversations and park activity fade as guests turn toward the flagpole. Veterans and military families may find the experience especially emotional, but even guests without a direct military connection often recognize the significance of the moment. When the ceremony ends, the usual sounds and movement of Main Street return. For a few minutes, however, one of the busiest areas in Magic Kingdom feels calm, respectful, and united.
